Kumbi Saleh was one of the capitals and the last of the Ghana Empire and a major muslim trading center. The capital was divided into two sections, one for muslims and second section connected via a road to the ghana's (king) palace compound. Homes dotted the main road. After the fall of the Ghana Empire, Walata became the most important trading center. Muslim traders rejected the authority of Fulani ruler Samanguru.
