Palenquero

Palenquero is a Spanish creole spoken in Colombia among black Colombians at Palenque de San Basilio, a village along the Caribbean coast, southeast of Cartagena, and two neighborhood in Barranquilla. The language also has elements of Kikongo and Portuguese. The Colombian government, Ministries of Education, has tried preserving the tongue, due to declining speakers. Palenque de San Basilio was founded by runaway slaves. Palenquero is one of the few Afro-Spanish creole to develop in the new world.
