Raffia Cloth

Raffia Cloth was cloth made of raffia palm fiber. The Kuba people were specialist in the craft of raffia cloth. Raffia cloth was produced in an upright single-heddle loom. The fiber was woven into a square cloth called an mbal.  The cloth was used as a currency in central Africa. Women in Kuba society would design the material. Men would paint the design on their own cloth.
