Suriname is a South American country bordered by Guyana to the west, French Guiana to the east, and Brazil to the south, located 4 00 N, 56 00 W. Paramaribo is the capital. Sranan Tongo, an english creole, is the language of everyday common conversation. Dutch is the official language but English is widely spoken. It has an area of 163,820 sq. km. The ethnic breakdown of Suriname are 31% Creole (descendants of African slaves who remained in Dutch society), 10% "Maroons" (descendants of runaway African slaves who formed societies in the forest), 37% Hindustani (also known locally as "East Indians";their ancestors emigrated from northern India in the latter part of the 19th century), 15% Javanese( descendants of indonesians), 2% Amerindian , 2% Chinese, 1% white, 2% other.
