Yegena Chewata

Yegena Chewata is an Ethiopian sport, played with a wooden stick and wooden ball, usually played on Christmas or January 7. All class of Ethiopians play the sport together, a very rare event. The game has been played since the introduction of Christianity in Ethiopia. It became very popular under Emperor Menelick. It was not promoted under Emperor Haileselassie regime. After the regime fell, the sport became concentrated in the rural area. Rules began to be added more recently as the sport began to spread in modern times. The stick is usually 1 meter to 20 cm long.
